Context: In Belgium, as in many countries, leaving your car's engine running while stationary is not only a punishable offence but also extremely harmful to public health and the environment.

Health and environmental risks

  1. Air pollution: An idling engine emits large quantities of pollutants such as nitrogen dioxide (NO2) and fine particles (PM2.5). These substances degrade air quality, especially in urban areas with dense traffic.
  2. Health impact: Pollutants emitted by idling vehicles can cause serious health problems. Nitrogen dioxide and fine particles are associated with respiratory diseases such as asthma, chronic bronchitis and other cardiovascular diseases. Children, older people and people with chronic illnesses are particularly vulnerable.
  3. Greenhouse effect: The CO2 emitted by idling vehicles also contributes to global warming. Even when stationary, a running engine keeps burning fuel and emitting greenhouse gases.

Legislative and regulatory measures

  • Bans and fines: Many regions have introduced strict rules against this practice. In Belgium, you may not leave your vehicle's engine running while it is stationary, except in exceptional circumstances such as traffic jams. Offenders face fines.
  • Awareness: Awareness campaigns are regularly run to inform drivers about the dangers and environmental impact of this practice. They also encourage good habits, such as switching off the engine during long waits.

Practical tips

  1. Switch off the engine: If you have to wait more than a few seconds, it is better to switch off the engine. Modern engines do not need to idle to stay efficient, and they are often fitted with automatic start/stop.
  2. Use alternatives: In winter, instead of leaving the engine running to heat the cabin, use warm clothes or blankets.
Invest in accessories such as heated seats.
  3. Plan your journey: Plan your trips to avoid frequent stops. Use navigation systems to avoid traffic jams and congested areas.
