New registration tax in Wallonia: what you need to know!
Garage Privé, Louis & Nathan du Garage Privé

Effective date: 1 July 2025

The Walloon Parliament has definitively adopted a major reform of the registration tax (TMC). From 1 July 2025, this tax, paid at registration, will use a new calculation that takes into account:

  • Base Amount (BA) after degressive reduction (vehicle age)
  • Engine power (in kW)
  • CO₂ emissions (g/km)
  • Maximum authorised mass (kg) - MAM
  • Energy/fuel type (combustion, hybrid, electric)

📊 How is the TMC calculated?

The formula is as follows:

TMC = BA × (CO₂ ÷ X) × (MAM ÷ Y) × C

  • BA = Base Amount after degressive reduction (vehicle age)
  • CO2 = CO2 emissions
  • X = CO2 coefficient
  • MAM = Maximum Authorised Mass
  • Y = Mass coefficient
  • C = Energy/fuel coefficient

The formula explained:

BA: base amount based on kW, reduced according to age

CO₂/X: emissions divided by a figure depending on WLTP/NEDC (1 for electric)

MAM/Y: effect of the vehicle’s weight

C: coefficient depending on the fuel (electric, hybrid…)

Range: between €50 and €9,000

Reductions: -€250 for large families, from 2026 -€250 for single-parent families

⚠️ Practical impact: Tesla Model 3

Under the old system, the TMC on an electric car such as the Tesla Model 3 was €61.50. With the reform, the TMC soars to around €1,100, or even up to €1,588 according to some simulations.
A spectacular difference.

🔍 Who will be hit hardest?

  • Heavy, powerful electric cars: taxed much more than before (Tesla, electric SUVs)
  • Hybrids and combustion-engine cars: less impact, except for powerful, heavy models
  • Small electric cars: still favoured, sometimes taxed at the minimum

💡 Why this change?

The Walloon government wants to:

  • Encourage lighter, less polluting vehicles
  • Take into account the impact on roads and the environment
  • Make taxation fairer by penalising heavier vehicles

✅ How can you prepare?

Before buying: use a simulator to estimate your TMC in 2025-2026

  • Choose carefully: favour light electric cars or efficient hybrids
  • Make use of the reductions: check whether your car falls into the large family or single-parent family category
  • Consider a used car: the TMC decreases with the vehicle’s age (degressive coefficients)

🧩 In short:

Old system

New system (from July 2025)

Tax based on power (kW)

Full calculation: power, CO₂, weight, fuel

Minimum TMC: €61.50

Range: €50 → €9,000

Electric vehicles strongly favoured

Heavy electric vehicles heavily taxed

🔎 Before you buy or register, plan ahead: your vehicle could cost more than €1,000 in tax, especially electric models such as the Tesla Model 3. To avoid nasty surprises: calculate, compare, optimise!
